An update
Well, turns out my website, www.alldayart.com is now defunct. Thanks to some guy in Belgravia stealing my domain name. I am pretty disappointed and upset at this. On the other hand though, hey... new beginnings! I am fully aware that the site was badly in need of an update, ha! ;) But I planned to just let it run its course till expiration, renew the domain name and transfer it over to the company that my husband and I use for our other sites. To my knowledge (and I have it on the receipt) the site expired in April 2012 (I have had it since '04)... however, this wasn't the case, it expired in April of THIS YEAR. Wellllll, damn! I never did receive any emails notifying me that i needed to renew, so along came this Belgravian f***er and bought my domain name, and obviously is just waiting for someone (preferably me) to buy it back from him for a ton more $. UGH.
So, fuck it. I made a Facebookpage to showcase my artwork instead of going with alldayart.net or whatever else. Because I just want my old .com back, and frankly right now i don't have the money to buy a domain again and to pay for another site being hosted. So,www.alldayart.com and Facebook it is then!

I hate Macy's
I hate Macy's. You probably don't hear that phrase often. I am sure I'm a part of a small group; and hey, that's fine by me. Now, you're probably wondering why on earth I don't like Macy's. I'll explain and I'll start from the beginning.... First off, let me be clear and say that I didn't always hate Macy's. in fact, I loved Macy's! I was able to forgive them for buying out Miami's beloved Burdine's. Despite that, I was fan of Macy's. Up until 4 months ago. And in the past 4 months there have been 4 incidents that caused both my husband and I to rapidly go from annoyance to hate.
Incident 1:
Macy's was one of our wedding registries. My mother-in-law bought us some pillows from the registry and when we received them in the mail, we realized we chose ones that were just way too thick for our sleeping style. So we went to return them, and when the woman went to give us the money back she declared the total as $36.00. "Wait, what?? that can't be right, the pillows are $25 each." (there were 2 pillows, so it should have been $50.00) and the woman explained that she was viewing the receipt on her computer and the original purchase price was $17.99 per pillow. Which didn't make any sense because the receipt (which my mother-in-law mailed to us later) said $24.99 / pillow) Instead of $24.99, we were getting $17.99 back - obviously it didn't matter that she had purchased them before they went on sale... that is just wrong.
Incident 2:
Another wedding registry mishap. A friend of mine purchased 2 sets of wine glasses, each set came in its own box. When it arrived in the mail, one of the boxes was clearly broken, you could hear all the glass rattling inside as soon as you handled it. My husband immediately handed it back to the UPS delivery guy and said "um, this sounds pretty broken..." and the UPS guy was like "oh wow yeah it is. I'll take that back for you." A few minutes later, my husband called Macy's about what just happened, to make sure that sending it back via UPS was the correct thing to do. The customer service woman assured him that yes, indeed he did it correctly. If an item arrives broken, one is supposed to decline it. There is no need to accept it anyways and try to return it in the store; in fact, you are NOT supposed to do this. Ok great. We're glad to know we did the right thing. A couple of weeks later, after our wedding, when we went into Macy's to return the pillows, we also inquired about the wine glasses because we hadn't received a replacement set, nor had we received another gift that was on back order (will talk more about that in the next one.) The woman at the customer service desk informed us that we had done it incorrectly, we were NOT supposed to send back the broken package through UPS. Instead we should have accepted it anyways and made the exchange in the store. And because we did not do this, it was just impossible for us to get a replacement set. Since the glasses were returned, they were automatically refunded to the purchaser and not replaced..... what??? my god, is this not confusing?! Macy's clearly has serious miscommunication between their departments. So because of all this, my poor friend had to deal with calling them up, canceling the order, checking her credit card statements, and then she went to place another order on a different gift to make up for it (even though she didn't need to... <3 u, coliene. :) and the person she was on the phone with didn't bother to inform her that it was on back order, so she didn't realize that part till well after she ordered it. Sheesh.
Incident 3:
Another back order incident, but not with the above mentioned gift. This is a different one. A family friend had purchased 6 sets of silverware (!!!) and apparently if you purchased more than 5 sets, you got a nice onyx black silverware box to go with it, for free. Sweet! ...... but not really because we never got any silverware to put in it. When the order was placed in July/August, it was showing up on the registry as "on back order" but we didn't think much of it. At one point we got an email notification saying we should be getting it some time in October. Ok, that's cool, no worries. October comes, we get married, October goes; and its now November. Still no delivery of the silverware, but again we're not too worried about it. Until we get another email notification saying that we won't get the silverware until November 23rd. Um what? Okay, something isn't right. The whole time we have been asking about the glasses and the pillows at the other incidents, we could never get a clear answer as to why they were on backorder or when exactly we would get the silverware. Finally, when we went in to see about the pillows, the woman gave us a Macy's warehouse phone number to call and inquire. Which of course was no help. My husband was always put on hold whenever he called. Finally, he decided to just call the manufacturer of the silverware themselves, Dansk. The Dansk rep (who was super nice) said she did not recognize the style of the silverware. Her words were "wow, hmmm... those don't look familiar. I've worked here for 3 years and have never seen that style before.. let me go check." When she comes back to the phone, she informs us that Dansk has not made that model in several years!! Here is the kicker: when we chose that silverware, it was ON DISPLAY at Macy's. So, tell me, why in the world does Macy's still have years old, discontinued silverware on display for purchase?! Macy's do yourselves and your customers a freaking favor and do a damn inventory! To make all of this worse, when the buyer of the silverware went to cancel her order (after we informed her of this news) Macy's put her credit card on hold and told her that they could n0t cancel her order because they had already shipped the onyx flatware case that came with it for free. And because the order shows up on their computer as "in progress" and not "completed" - because the silverware itself hadn't been shipped - they cannot cancel it. Ummm..... but the silverware will never ship!!! Because the silverware DOES NOT EXIST! Our friend and Macy's exchanged several emails back and forth explaining this whole fiasco. FINALLY they it dawned on them that there was simply nothing else to do but cancel the order because the damn thing no longer existed, oh but, that flatware box had to be returned first.... WHAT?! First of all, that was free. And it was automatic! She didn't choose to give us the box. It was like an automated thing where if you purchased 5+, it came with it. The friend gave them hell for it. Eventually Macy's said "Ok. Keep the box. And your order is canceled." Ffffff.....finally. Good lord.
Incident 4:
This recent happening wasn't wedding registry-related. (surprise, surprise.) This was in an actual store. They did a bait-and-switch on me, and it was total BS. (and illegal!) What happened was, my mother and I were shopping for gifts. She had two things she wanted to buy (x-mas gifts for my husband and my dad) and both were on sale, and on top of a lot of the sale signs were additional signs that said if you used your Macy's card, you got an additional 20% off; so for example if something was 50% off, you got another 20%, making it 70% off. The sign was as clear as day; and these signs were on several different racks. But when we went to buy the items, they told us "oh this item is not eligible for the 20% discount" - even though my mother has a Macy's card, and even though the sign said so. Naturally, I questioned them about it and pointed the signs out, and their answer was "oh yeah, that doesn't mean everything on the rack applies" ...What??? And its not like these were all a big mix of random clothing on a clearance rack. These were one brand, one style specific racks and shelves. So my mother said "wait, let me see if I understand this right... do you mean to tell me if I were to buy this shirt..." - and she pointed to the closest rack with a 25% + 20% off discount sign on top of it - "it may or may not be eligible for the additional 20% off even though the sign says 'use your Macy's card and get additional 20% off' ??" and the supervisor's answer was Yes. She attempted to further explain it by saying that they just put these signs up all over the store and it doesn't really matter exactly whats on the rack, because it doesn't always apply to what the sign says." Wow. w-o-w. Talk about misleading and false and shifty advertising. I don't care if it does or does not apply anymore. Why would you want to advertise half ass like that? Its going to result in an unhappy and/or pissed off customer. Which is exactly what I was. (more so pissed off in my case) My mother turns to me and says "do we still want these items anymore?" and I said "nope!" and we walked out.
Typically its 3 strikes and your out. But I am a nice person. I gave them 4 chances. But they bait-and-switched me. Macy's, you're out. I am done. As far as I'm concerned, they're a lousy company, and unworthy of my hard-earned money. Since I am a person who goes by "never say never, instead I will say that it will be a damn very long time before Macy's sees a dime from me again. Oh, and I am changing my Thanksgiving tradition from watching the Macy's parade to watching the Westminster Dog Show. I am more of an animal lover anyways. :)
(p.s. I think my mom is going to cancel her Macy's card.)

Food + Beverage
Shawn surprised me today with this book (which has been on my Amazon wish list for a while too). It's called "What To Drink With What You Eat" by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page. It is basically a food + beverage pairing reference book. I haven't read that much of it yet obviously, but I did flip through it and wow! looks pretty intensive and informative! Its all based on "expert advice from American's best sommeliers." Also, it's not limited to just wine and beer. Well, it is mostly in regards of wine and beer, but there's also mention of coffee, tea, champagne, non-alcoholic drinks and some fruit drinks. And what's even better, is that the book also contains some pretty nice photos! Makes me want to venture into food photography.... hmmm... :)

long time, no see...
wow, its been QUITE some time since i've been on here to write anything! Sometimes i REALLY do not know where the time goes. Really. The date of my last blog reads "October" ..... sheesh. Shame on me for slacking! ;) It's funny because i read blogs a lot! some are daily reads. Now if only I blogged as often as I read em... I think part of it is because sometimes I feel like i should wait until I have something "important" to say. But then again, a lot of the blogs I read are short & sweet and a lot of times those are most enjoyable to read. So maybe I should open my mind up a bit more and make a 2nd attempt to be better at this :)

I love it when...

Etsy love.
So I have been venturing into Etsy! Well, let me clarify... I have been into Etsy before. I became a member sometime in January '09. It is quite addicting! :) I always find oodles of interesting stuff there. I always find myself needing to click on the next page to see what else is there...
But now I have gone from customer to seller. I decided to flip the cards and try to sell some of my artwork on Etsy. I am just putting up a few photos for now. So we shall see how it goes!

On Thank You notes.
Last month I went to San Francisco to visit Shawn; on my flight home I had read a book I borrowed from him - "The Last Lecture" by Randy Pausch. I was totally engrossed in the book from page one. I read the entire book during the whole flight back to Miami. It is an incredibly touching book and brought tears to my eyes several times.
While nearly every chapter has its own meaning and impact; there is a particular one I wanted to share, "The Lost Art of Thank-You Notes." Here is an excerpt from this chapter:
"Showing gratitude is one of the simplest yet most powerful things humans can do for each other. And despite my love of efficiency, I think that thank-you notes are best done the old-fashioned way, with pen and paper." -- Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture.I think it is a lost art indeed; and I think this makes it more powerful nowadays. In today's digital era, it is sometimes kind of surprising to see colorful envelopes with handwriting in our mailboxes. After reading that chapter, I immediately thought of my friend Christine, and how she has sent me 2 cards in the mail recently. I have many friends who aren't local anymore and receiving cards from them is always so nice! Whether its a Thank You, Happy Birthday, Congrats, etc. When the friend is no longer in the same city as you, it's more usual to receive snail-mail from them. But the reason why Mr. Pausch's statements reminded me of Christine's actions specifically is because she is a local friend! I talk to and see her often. She lives about 15-20 minutes from me. Yet she took the time to send me a sweet Thank-You card after I took care of her dog while she was on a vacation. Then another time I had given her a gift, a couple of days after giving it to her, I found a pretty little card in my mailbox. Despite the fact that I received hugs and emphatic verbal thank yous from Christine in person, she still took the time to hand-write a sweet card. And each time it brought a smile to my face. It just made it all the more appreciative. Add another reason to the list to why I heart that girl and why she's my friend :)
Randy Pausch has a point (among many!) in his book - do not underestimate the power of the written - literally written - word!

I came across the above quote in today's edition of The Miami Herald; and it struck a chord with me. It reminds me of what people have told me over the years regarding love and relationships; and what I now know to be true. Its that your significant other should also be one of your best friends. There are all kinds of situations. Whether yours is friends first, then lovers second; or starting out as romantic and friendship forming later, one thing is true for all: you need to truly LIKE the person and who they are. I am a lucky woman to have both with Shawn.

Choose Your Own Adventure.
Anyone remember the Choose Your Own Adventure books? I do! Well, to be more exact - I did. Then I forgot. And then I was just now reminded again.
These awesome books had come up in a conversation I was having with Shawn sometime in the beginning of the year. I was basically asking him if he had read them, saying how much I loved reading them as a kid and how they were hard to find nowadays; and I didn't really see them in bookstores anymore. But this was just a little passing topic in daily chit-chat between Shawn & I, so I completely forgot about them and made no attempt to look for them, probably because I figured they just simply did not publish them any longer.
Fast forward to last week when I went to San Francisco to visit Shawn; as part of my birthday gift he presented a box set of the first original 6 Choose Your Own Adventure books! I was totally not expecting them! Especially since I had a.) forgotten about that convo and b.) thought it was out-of-print. (And Shawn is awesome for actually remembering that small detail!! ;) These were apparently not easy to get. Soon after our convo about the books, Shawn had emailed the publishing company, Chooseco, to see how he could obtain the first set of CYOA books. At first they had been out-of-stock. But after a couple of more email exchanges, they informed Shawn that there was a box set of books 1 though 6 set to be released in June.
A little history on the books: Choose Your Own Adventure books are a series of children's gamebooks, originally published by Bantam Books, and currently being re-published by Chooseco. The collection consists of 185 books spanning over the course of 19 years (1979 - 1998.) Mostly written by Edward Packard and R.A. Montgomery (there were several other authors over the years as well). The format of the book is that each one is written in a 2nd person point of view, with the reader assuming the role as the main character. So it feels to the reader as if they are actually involved in the storyline and making all the decisions that determine the main character's actions in response to the plot the the story's eventual outcome. Each book had probably about 20+ possible endings.
The moment I opened up the box set of books I felt like it was 1989 again! The titles came rushing back and I clearly remembered 3 of those 6 books being my favorites and always having them checked out of the school library. I can now very clearly remember "Journey Under the Sea" being the one I read the most (which is kind of funny now since I am not a particularly active swimmer, nor did I ever end up going diving as an adult. And what makes this even more funny is that Shawn is actually a scuba dive minor.) What was amazing though was the clearly detailed memory the books triggered - rushing to the shelf after library class's story time was over, to where that book was. The hardness of the cover. The clear plastic protective library wrap around it, wearing out at the corners. The call number sticker on its spine, yellowing from age. The detailed black ink illustrations. Walking happily and proudly to the librarian's desk with the book in my hand to check it out. The smallness of the book and how it fit perfectly into my backpack's front zipper pocket (and i mean perfectly! as if it was meant to be in my bag) and into my hands. I actually remember my 9 year old self treasuring this book and always making sure it was snug into that backpack zipper pocket where no one else could get it. That book was mine. I loved it, I wanted to read it. No one would probably appreciate it as much as me. And during recess or lunch or after school, it was in my hands, transporting me into another world, another time. One where the possibilities and endings were endless. There were no mistakes because if you didn't like it, all you had to do was go back to page 1. Easy.

on photography & relationships.

I am currently doing what every photographer does when returning from a trip: uploading, editing & reflecting. One of my personal favorite things about being a photographer is the traveling part of it. Whether it be a destination in the same city or one in a different continent, I love seeing the place through the camera. It always provides a different view and makes me see the location in more detail. This calls to mind, an interview I read recently in "American Photo" magazine with the actress Jessica Lange, who apparently has been photographing for over a decade (and even studied it at college). She has now published a book of her photos, 50 Photographs (powerHouse books) a Noir photography collection. In the interview, one quote she said rang true with me: "I love to experience something new through the camera... which is probably why so many of my photographs are from my travels. I find I shoot all the time if I'm in a place that's new and mysterious. If I'm in New York, I rarely pick my camera up." - this is something I can really relate to. When I am home in Miami, I don't pick up my camera much (unless of course I am working, but as far as personal shooting -i.e. art - goes, it doesn't happen often) however when I am on a trip, one or two of my cameras are always with me.
My most recent trip was to Lake Placid & Winter Haven, FL. with my boyfriend Shawn, who is also a photographer. This trip and the previous one (to San Francisco) have been with him and consisted of us walking around, shooting. One might worry that competition would ensue or several images would end up appearing the same, which could cause a blow to the person's sense of individuality, especially when you're a couple. This isn't the case with us and I have never worried (and don't think I will) about the aforementioned issues. We are just simply too different as photographers for that to happen. His point of view is his and mine is mine. And that has shown to be evident through our photographs. Having gone through mine and now looking through his, I have noticed that we'd shoot the exact same scene sometimes but focused on two totally different things. They're almost opposites, which is quite interesting to see; being able to see different views of the same image makes the scene become multi-dimensional, thus allowing the images to compliment each other. Notice I say "compliment" and not "complete". Because my photograph and Shawn's photograph are two pieces of work on their own. However, together they work well - much like Shawn and I as individuals and as a couple. I have heard people describe their significant other as "completing them." I have always thought of this statement to be rather bothersome because it is like saying you are not "a whole" without the other person. Personally, I think that feeling like that is quite an unpleasant feeling. I want to feel like me and happy when it is just me, as I want to (and do) feel like myself and happy when I am with Shawn. It is like the saying, "in order to love someone else, you have to love yourself first." That is why I think two people "complimenting" each other is a far better type of relationship.
